Point Lobos, CA

Ansel Adams called Point Lobos “the greatest meeting of land and sea” on earth. That may even be an understatement of the rugged beauty where cypress trees line the rocky coastline with waves exploding in magnificent chaos. Abundance of wildlife peppers the shoreline and nearby waters, from brown pelicans to sea lions and southern sea otters. Learn more about Point Lobos here: www.pointlobos.org

The day I hiked along the multiple trails, up and down the “natural” stairs of rocks and giant roots, with views into several coves was actually a bit raining and overcast. Thankful for rain gear for both my camera and myself. Love my Atlas Adventure pack as I was able to carry about 40 pounds of camera equipment (different lenses, tripod, as well as water, snacks, layers of clothing) as I hiked about 10 miles.

One of the friendly docents approached me as I set up for a shot of a lone cypress standing high on a rocky peninsula jetting out along the early part of they Cypress Grove Trail. She said “Ansel Adams used to like this spot and would often frame the same cypress between these other branches.” It was the same shot I was setup for. How amazing to be standing in the same spot where an admired and master photographer once stood.

A beautiful area. If visiting, wear good shoes and be prepared to hike if you want to visit most of the coves and all the different trails. Hope you enjoy some of these shots. In honor of Ansel Adams, I’ve put some B&W shots in the gallery below. Click on one of them to open the series in a lightbox for scrolling.
