Lapakahi - Hawaii

On the leeward coastline of Kohala is the remains of Lapakahi, an early settlement of fishermen and farmers from 700 years ago. The rocky and uneven trail leads you around the lava rock borders of homes and burial grounds and even the Ku’ula, where the fisherman always gave a portion of his catch to the fishing god who lived in the stone.

Really a fascinating place to imagine the lives of these early settlers who established trade and flourished from the land and sea. It’s easy to see how they found the cove to be a safe place to land their canoes. A great side excursion on this trip.
